Christmas List

Out at the shops this morning, I was listening to the people around me talk. So many of them seemed to be in the same state I was in. That is, trying to buy gifts for people who really don't need more things. We seem to be trapped in this cycle of obligation, where love is equated with how many presents you can provide. I know that if we stop and think about it, this is clearly not the case, but we still let the culture guilt us into this type of action. We know it's the love, and the warm thoughts, that count, but we don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, either. I wonder how this cycle can be broken.

When I had some time, I made a list of what I am really looking forward to this holiday season.

Other than for the little kids, there is not much buying involved here. And we all know that the kids will usually spend more time playing with the boxes the toys arrived in! I hope that your holiday season is filled with lots of whatever is most important to you.

Check out Aimee's list to see her "pathetic Christmas houses", and to find links to more lists.

your list makes me warm inside. great contribution. i enjoy seeing the family too, but sometimes get caught up in the hectic shuffle. i miss the conversations most. when you have 60 extended family members to visit in 4 days, the conversations are short.

have a great holiday!

*i'm playing this week too.

This really hit home - you said what I've been thinking as I'm rushing around trying to find so-called "perfect" gifts. I may bring up the subject... in between the precious hugs and conversation. Beautiful.

Oh my goodness, I want to go to your Christmas with all those hugs and happy smiles and little kiddos running about! Your list was just what the holidays call for :) Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones.

present idea: a box, in a box, in a box, in a box.... well, maybe that won't go over well... Have a nice time with family - looks like you do! {:-D

I could not agree more. I know more and more of us are thinking the same thing. We had a discussion at work about it, and then I had one with my mom. I think we are just getting consumered out. My husband had to harass me for three weeks to get a Christmas wish list and all I could think of for a store bought item was socks. lol. Have a merry christmas Karen!

I have been trying to drop the hint to my in-laws to ease up on the gift giving for a while now. I think my mother-in-law is just addicted to buying for people. Good luck with that struggle and have fun with your family!

So true. I want or need nothing. If I need something I just go buy it. My friends and family all agreed to stop presents a long time ago. We all just enjoy a meal together with some wine and good conversation. Perfect!

A great list. And so true about trying to shop for people who already have more than enough in the way of things.

Wow! Love your list! Love the card game (even though they all cheat) part! Reminds me of my dad's constant laments. "Stupid card game! I'm never playing again! Whose deal?"

I always have fun getting ready for the kids and some of my goofy friends. Then have to figure out what to do for everyone else (including hubby who is not easy to shop for). This year, I am writing a lot of notes letting people know what I love about them. Sometimes more meaningful than a light-up tie or parcel of fudge :o) Oh! One friend and I celebrate Christmas together in January once the kids are back in school. We love it! Gives us a chance to have fun crafting for each other after the busy season is over AND we spend a fun day together without feeling guilty :o)

Enjoy your holidays!
